7/8 violin- Andrea Amati

Posted on | April 13, 2010 | 6 Comments|

My assistant is making a copy of a 7/8 size violin by Cremonese maker,  Andrea Amati.  Almost 20 years ago I was inspired to copy the same violin so I’ve enjoyed seeing this instrument take shape. We hope to have this violin available in the fall. The 7/8 size may suit either a young player or an adult with smaller hands.

Andrea Amati made violins ( also violas and cellos) approximately from 1550-70  and laid down the foundation for all violins to follow. Last year I had the chance to see a few Andrea Amati instruments and was reminded of his extraordinary level of workmanship even when compared to other makers such as Stradivari.  In my opinion Andrea’s scrolls in particular stand out as supreme examples of the violin makers craft. I have small hands and arms. Would be interested to know more about this. Would the sound be affected by the smaller size & do you think it would it still have a professional sound?

Hello – The sound of the 7/8 violin is actually very good. It’s worth noting that Guarneri Del Gesu often made slightly undersized violins which of course sound very well too.

    Dear Guy,
I would like to build a copy of this violin in 7/8 size. Would you be interested in selling a working copy of this violin? Is this something you can do for me? Thank you for any response.

Hello Elena- the price for the 7/8 Amati copy violin is $10,500 Canadian dollars (almost the same as US dollars). Regarding the sound – we spent time adjusting the violin to sound very well but the best way would be for you to try the violin. I’ll be in touch to arrange this if you wish. Thank you.
